I read yesterday (Sunday) that people stood in line at the various Costco locations for hours to stock up on food and toilet papers (?). I read that the line started to form at 8 a.m., two hours before the store opening hour! Yes, Coronavirus, aka COVID-19, is very contagious, but it's not as deadly as SARS (9.5%) or MERS (34.4%).
According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, www.cdc.gov), the fatality rate for COVID-19 in the U.S. is, so far, less than 1.0%, below that of a yearly influenza. CDC estimates that as many as 56,000 people die from the flu or flu-like illness each year. As of this writing, only nine people died from this virus. 80% of the people who contract this new virus do not even know they are sick because they only suffer mild symptoms. The people who died in Kirkland had previous health conditions. Why are we then freaking out?
As many of you know, I am no fan of Donald Trump. No matter who the democratic nominee will be, I will vote for that person over the current one. However, Trump made one right call when he banned all trips to and from China when Coronavirus was at its initial stage in January. That ban prevented a widespread contagion in the US. By comparison, Korea didn't, and look where it is now. It still has not restricted all travels between Korea and China, citing economic and geo-political reasons. Well, do you really want to risk the health and life of your citizens for economic/political reasons? Moon was wrong not implementing the ban right away, and Trump was right.
So far so good for the U.S. Trump recently appointed our God-fearing, bible-thumping Vice President Pence as the Corona Czar. Whether Pence is competent at his new job and will put aside politics for the sake of public health is a big question mark. We will just have to wait and see how effectively the Trump administration will combat this virus because it has now landed on our shores.
According to Trump, we are in "great shape" and "totally prepared." I doubt that. The true test of our readiness has begun, and I hope sincerely Dems and GOPs can work together and focus on controlling the damage of this virus. On the other hand, even if we are not quite ready, we will be ok in my opinion, IF WE STAY CALM.
Let us not allow the fear of what we don't know overwhelm what we do know. Treat COVID-19 like a common flu. CDC recommends that you wash your hands frequently, drink lots of water, cover your mouth and nose when coughing, and otherwise practice good healthy habits. CDC also says that you do not need a mask, unless you are already sick; so, don't go stand in line to buy masks you don't need. If you are sick, whether it's COVID-19 or non-COVID, stay home. Avoid large gatherings, if possible.
If I may add, I think we should go eat at our favorite local restaurants and continue to travel like before. We should patronize our local businesses as much as possible; now is not the time to alienate our neighbors. Play golf, go hiking, and stay active. Basically, do the things we already know to stay healthy. The last thing we need to do is to retract from all economic activities in light of this new type of a flu. And don't stock up on your food because the markets will be there tomorrow also. Some people are freaking out as if there is a zombie apocalypse. There isn't.
Let's stay calm, conduct our business as usual, exercise reasonable precautions, and practice other healthy habits. CDC also recommends that, if you have not taken your flu shot this winter, please do so. It won't prevent you from being sick w/ Coronavirus, but, if you are sick, you will be more susceptible to getting Coronavirus. Please get your flu shot. AND, MOST OF ALL, PLEASE DON¡¯T PANIC! PANIC IS WORSE THAN THE VIRUS.
